Dallas Stars 3, Nashville Predators 1: Deuces Not Wild

If Saturday’s contest was any indication of a possible playoff series, the Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars would put on one heck of a best-of-7 series.

A pair of late goals pushed the Stars ahead in the third period as they handed the Predators a 3-1 loss in the first of two meetings over a span of six days.

Calle Järnkrok opened the scoring 9:35 into the contest, snapping a quick shot off the left post and just under the crossbar with assists from Ryan Hartman and Colton Sissons.

Tyler Seguin tied the game for Dallas less than two minutes later with assists from Alexander Radulov and Esa Lindell.

Dallas had its first power play with 13:23 left in the second after P.K. Subban was sent to the box for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Hartman and Lindell squared off midway through the second period and both combatants sat for a bit as a result.

Mattias Janmark went off for holding the stick at the 12:08 mark to put the Predators back on the power play.

Roman Josi went off for delay of game 7:40 into the third period. That Dallas power play lasted all of six seconds, as John Klingberg tripped Viktor Arvidsson just after the next faceoff.

Nothing came out of that 4-on-4 sequence, and Nashville did not score on the ensuing six-second power play on the tail end, increasing their streak to 31 consecutive attempts without a power play goal.

Jamie Benn was called for roughing at 11:31, but the Preds again failed to score with the man advantage.

Blake Comeau scored with 4:13 to play to put Dallas ahead. Peter Laviolette challenged for goaltender interference, but the goal was confirmed upon review.

Mattias Janmark knocked home a rebound with 3:30 left to put the Stars up 3-1.

Dallas entered the game having won three straight contests while allowing only three goals in those outings.

Random Observations

  • Get an eyeful of Juuse Saros’ gold pads matched up with the home jersey during warmups. Perhaps the pads will dull a little bit, because they’re not the same shade right now. #newness
  • For one night, I have no problem tolerating the train whistles. I didn’t really miss them since they left, but there’s nothing wrong with nostalgia if it’s one night only.
  • Elsewhere, the Jets are up 6-0 on the Ducks and the first period isn’t even over yet. My suggestion: Randy Carlyle and John Gibson should switch spots for the second period.
  • Great to have Jordin Tootoo back in Nashville and man, did it get loud for his ceremonial puck drop.
  • Nifty little faceoff play from the Sissons-Hartman-Järnkrok line to get zone entry.
  • Good flow to this game so far. And, being the second game of a back-to-back, pretty good start for the Preds as well.
  • Not a good idea to give Tyler Seguin a breakaway like that…although with that miss, his wrist shot accuracy in NHL 19 just dropped a couple of points.
  • What a nasty wrister from Calle Järnkrok. Fooled a lot of people except the refs and anybody seated straight along the goal line. Light went off, horn didn’t.
  • Seguin made up for his breakaway misfire. Guess that shot accuracy goes back to where it was.
  • Needed Yakety Sax for that sequence around the net. Anton Khudobin falls, Filip Forsberg gets away with holding the stick, and the puck somehow doesn’t end up in the net.
  • It’s now 8-2 Jets after 2 in Winnipeg. The Ducks’ destruction continues.
  • Barely one zone entry on the 58 seconds of power play time to begin the second period.
  • Forsberg’s out here like “you almost had it, oh, you gotta be quicker than that”
  • I MEAN COME ON…/

  • These refs have pretty much taken the night off, it seems.
  • Roman Josi’s stick breaks on a delayed penalty and the Stars still can’t get the puck.
  • A Dan Hamhuis wraparound attempt. Okay.
  • If the suckage doesn’t cease on the power play (I know, when pigs fly), 39 consecutive attempts without a goal on the man-advantage is the franchise record.
  • Ryan Hartman just goaded Jamie Benn into taking a penalty. He’s feeling spicy tonight.
  • I think the Preds ran out of gas in the third period./

  1. Ryan Hartman. He was being quite saucy tonight.
  2. Calle Järnkrok. A pretty nice goal to open the scoring. Too bad that was all of it.
  3. Filip Forsberg. Fil being Fil, right?
