It began last Thursday night against the Boston Bruins. The Nashville Predators were down a goal in the third period, and the outlook was bleak. Then, against all logic, David Legwand tied the game, and we went to overtime, with the knowledge that the Predators had yet to win a game in the 4-on-4 extra frame.
Then, though, the captain would take things into his own hands. Shea Weber sent a missile past Tuukka Rask, and Nashville escaped with their first OT win of the year – a comeback victory.
On Saturday night, the Preds welcomed rivals Detroit to town, with fans justifiably skeptical over the team’s ability to win two huge games in a row. When the Predators fell behind late in the first, the pessimism was perhaps confirmed. This time, it would be a different set of heroes – rookies Jonathon Blum and Blake Geoffrion stepped to the forefront, putting the tying and game winning goals into the net and allowing Nashville to take their second straight come from behind win.
If you had thought that was all the magic the Predators had to give, I can’t say I would’ve blamed you – I thought much the same thing, particularly when Nashville fell behind 3-1 to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday afternoon. Of course, that was before Blake Geoffrion decided enough was enough and scored three straight Preds’ goals against all-world goaltender Ryan Miller.
When Nashville got to overtime in Buffalo, the momentum was so much on their side that this time, a win felt inevitable – and so it was after Martin Erat redirected a perfect Ryan Suter pass not 30 seconds into the extra period.
For those scoring at home, the Nashville Predators have come back to win three games in a row, and two of them in overtime. I don’t know how much longer the Preds can keep this up, but I do know this – it better not stop tonight against the Edmonton Oilers.
