Nashville Predators 2010-11 Season Preview: Jonas Andersson

In order to better preview the upcoming season, we’ll be taking a look at the Nashville Predators on a player by player basis, examining their role in the squad and expectations relative to capabilities. So bear with us as we examine 2010-11, from Andersson to Wilson. First up: Jonas Andersson.

When David Poile announced that the Predators would be signing a ‘mystery forward’ when free agency opened, it piqued the interest of just about everyone. What we didn’t realize, however, was that it’d be someone who had already seen time in a Predators uniform. A second round pick of the Preds’ all the way back in 1999, Andersson had been deemed a disappointment after spending most of his career in Europe. It’s with a little uncertainty, then, that we look at how he might impact the team in 2010-11.

Role

While prefacing this by saying that I’ve never actually seen Andersson, you know, play, it appears that between his build and playing style he’s suited for energy/checking duties. There’s evidence that he does have a scoring touch, but the Predators seem set in regards to their top six forwards, who will bear the majority of the scoring burden.

Contract

One year for $675,000. It’s a one-way deal so he’d make the same amount in Milwaukee, and he doesn’t need to clear waivers on the way down.

Expectations

Judging by his contract alone (not much more than Wade Belak, who will see next to no time on the ice this year), I doubt that the Predators expect much from the 29 year old Swede. Anything other than solid defense and hard work will be gravy. If he performs well on a line consisting of players such as Marcel Goc and Jordin Tootoo, then David Poile and Barry Trotz should be pleased. Its doubtful that Nashville would send him down to Milwaukee.

Andersson played in both Sweden and the KHL last year, registering a total of 13 goals and 13 assists in 39 games played. He also scored 6 goals for Sweden at the World Championships.

Prediction

No, the expectations are not high for Jonas Andersson. That will not, however, keep me from being (perhaps overly) optimistic. If he stays healthy, I’ve got him pegged for a 25 point season with some spot power play duty. What about you?
