It looks like the long-awaited expansion of available ice in the Nashville area might finally be picking up steam, as reports over the last couple days indicate that a long-vacant building in Hendersonville, Tennessee may get two NHL-size sheets of ice by July 2011. According to Sherry Mitchell of the Hendersonville Star News, everything is in the planning stages at this point, led by local businessman Sean Foley…
Foley said local residents interested in ice hockey have expressed interest in having a facility closer to home, some of whom currently drive to Franklin for practice.
“Sumner County represents a lot of the population of the ice skating in Middle Tennessee, but all of the dollars are going into Davidson and Williamson Counties because there’s no ice here,” Foley said. “Right now, it’s just a matter of getting everything together.”

Two new rinks on the north side of town would make a perfect complement to the already-running Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, A-Game Sportsplex to the south in Cool Springs, and the hockey facility due to open early next year in Murfreesboro, to the southeast. Jeff Cogen, the new CEO of the Nashville Predators, has proven experience helping to grow hockey at the grassroots level during his time in Dallas, and local hockey fans surely hope that these developments will help get that process rolling.
After all, it’s not just about access for the kids. Us adult league players need more ice, too!
