Nashville Predators 3, Edmonton Oilers 2 (SO): Boyle’s Shootout Goal Secures Win Over Edmonton

On a relatively busy trade deadline day, the Predators faced the Edmonton Oilers in a Central Division vs. Pacific Division tilt. After an adorable ceremonial puck-drop courtesy of Isaiah Fisher, son of retired captain Mike Fisher, the Preds were off to the races with a modified lineup.

The boys in gold went on the first power play of the evening. A poor pass at the blue line by Filip Forsberg resulted in a shorthanded goal from Leon Draisaitl. Both Viktor Arvidsson and Ryan Johansen tried to tie the game but both hit the post.

A late push by the Predators resulted in several incredible chances on Oilers goaltender Mikko Koskinen. The Predators were awarded another power play, but would not find a tallying goal in the first period.

The Predators were sent to the box early in the second period. Matt Donovan was whistled for hooking in his first game in gold, but the Nashville penalty killers were successful. Kyle Turris was also whistled for hooking midway through the second and the Oilers returned to the power play. A speeding Arvidsson drew a tripping call on Sam Gagner and the teams began some 4-on-4 play.

Neither team was able to capitalize while down a man. Suddenly, a stretch pass from P.K. Subban ended up on the stick of Rocco Grimaldi. Grimaldi’s rebound was buried by Colton Sissons for his 11th goal of the season. The Bridgestone energy picked up after the tying goal. Less than two minutes later, Subban added a goal of his own off a blistering slap shot for Nashville’s second goal of the evening.

The Predators were able to withstand some early pressure from the Oilers in the beginning of the third period. Turris took another trip to the penalty box and the Predators were shorthanded with around 11 minutes remaining in the third. Draisaitl tallied again for the Oilers on the power play to tie the game.

Edmonton goalie Koskinen made a curious play with just over 3 minutes remaining in the third. Coming way out of his crease, he secured the puck and skated it back into his blue ice. The referees whistled him for a delay of game and the Predators attempted another power play.

With the score tied, OT would be required to settle the score. Captain Roman Josi drew a penalty early in OT to give the Predators an extra man. The Preds, predictably, were unable to capitalize on the OT power play. The overtime frame expired without a goal.

Filip Forsberg and Brian Boyle scored in the shootout for the Predators.
