Trade Deadline Liveblog & Discussion Thread
For all of today’s breaking news.
We have a one-hour audio stream going live on Facebook momentarily as we discuss the start of the day. We’ll also be checking in with updates as the day goes on, then coming back at 1:30 Central for more audio streaming as we wrap up the day. Also, check back for liveblogged updates from the three of us!
8:13: We’re having some technical difficulties with the livestream.
8:14: Today is feeling like it’s going to be quiet not just because every trade deadline day itself starts off feeling like that, but because a lot of the names on the board have already moved. With last night’s trade sending Mike Green to the Oilers (alas), and yesterday afternoon’s trade sending Ilya Kovalchuk to the Capitals while the Lightning decided for some reason to sign Zach Bogosian, we’re kind of drawing a blank on obvious moves, except that someone is probably going to trade for Chris Kreider. Condolences to their opponents’ goalies.
8:26: Livestream is back! We might go until 9 or we might keep going after.
8:40: The Senators have traded Vladislav Namestnikov to the Avalanche for a fourth-rounder next year.
Vladislav Namestnikov (to Colorado for a 4th) provides a fair bit of good 5v5 defence. pic.twitter.com/fRNbewbS3s

8:48: Ottawa is burning up the phones. They’ve sent Jean-Gabriel Pageau to the Islanders for...we’ll update you when we can.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau (to the Islanders) is a very strong 5v5 play-driver, especially defensively, with a weak shot. Excellent penalty-killer, good penalty differential. pic.twitter.com/21vhTKBLrn

8:52:
The #Sens a first in 2020, a second in 2020 and a third in 2022 in exchange for Pageau from the Isles. There are conditions on all picks. #TradeCentre

8:56: Potentially the only trade news the Preds will have today. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
🚨TRADE ALERT🚨
— Chris Mason (@cmace30) February 24, 2020
The Nashville Predators have acquired the rights to Christoph Roberto Masoni in exchange for a lightly used #Preds zamboni gravy boat.
Although he has not seen a single minute of action in 5 years he is apparently very happy & great dressing room guy. #Confirmed pic.twitter.com/Fr9coVs6Zq
9:12: We have a trade between the Panthers and the Hurricanes.
9:13: The Canes have acquired Vincent Trocheck in exchange for Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark, and two prospects.
In return to Florida go Haula, who drives offence to the front of the net well, and Wallmark, a 5v5 play-driver with a weak shot. pic.twitter.com/Wpi25VlygI

9:22: We’re going off the livestream now, but we’ll be back at 1:30 Central!
9:30: Breakfast time for Kate in Arizona. I assume that means that five trades will happen in the next five minutes. Y’all are on your own (no you’re not, you have Sarah and Nick).
10:00: Nashville has announced a 2 year, $4 million contract with forward Rocco Grimaldi. Well earned after Grimaldi went to arbitration as a RFA last summer. We’ll have more on that momentarily.
10:09: The Penguins have acquired Patrick Marleau, for some reason.
10:15: TSN reports Chris Kreider plans to re-sign with the Rangers. We can cancel the rest of the Trade Deadline.
Underrated, but with Kreider resigning and JGP off the board, Grandlund and Smith's value just went way up
— Nick Morgan (@_nsmorgan) February 24, 2020
10:21: We missed a Flyers deal half an hour ago—they’ve acquired Nate Thompson from the Canadiens for a fifth-round pick, which, sure, I guess? Seems silly but okay.
Nate Thompson (to Philadelphia for a 5th) is a below-average forward. There is a chance he is better than somebody already under contract. pic.twitter.com/hjjl4toqH0
— Micah Blake McCurdy (@IneffectiveMath) February 24, 2020
10:29 More on Kreider. It’s a 7-year deal (sure). Sportsnet’s reporting a $6.5 AAV (also sure.) So if you’re a Rangers fan... umm... congrats?
10:30: The other noteworthy part is the Rangers team president leading into that one with an announcement that Pavel Buchnevich and Igor Shesterkin were in a car accident (source; both are okay but banged-up). Is that why they opted to extend Kreider instead of trading him at this point in their rebuild? Is it unrelated? Did he just figure “might as well get the whole press conference done at once”?
10:33: The Avalanche and Maple Leafs have made a trade.
Calle Rosén (to Toronto) is extremely bad. Michael Hutchinson (to Colorado) is extremely bad. No you don't get a chart. Not you either.
— Micah Blake McCurdy (@IneffectiveMath) February 24, 2020
10:35: The Derek Grant sweepstakes is over.
ANA working on Derek Grant to PHI for Kyle Criscuolo a 4th-rounder #SNTrade
— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) February 24, 2020
10:38: Alison Lukan is reporting that Sportsnet is reporting that the Blue Jackets are working on a deal to acquire Andreas Athanasiou from the Red Wings—that one’s probably going to end up being a hockey trade if it happens.
10:57: Wayne Simmonds has been traded to the Sabres; the Devils get a 2021 fifth-round pick. Yikes.
10:59: Brooks Bratten is reporting that Mikael Granlund is not on the ice for practice, but Nick Bonino has returned from his illness. WILD SPECULATION.
11:06: The Devils also retain half of Simmonds’s salary. For a fifth-round pick next year. Simmonds is on an expiring deal, but still, good grief.
11:21: Pause speculation.
It's a maintenance day for Mikael Granund, illness for Pekka Rinne. #Preds
— Brooks Bratten (@brooksbratten) February 24, 2020
11:30: Um?
Hearing #isles are working on a deal that would reunite Zach Parise and GM Lou Lamoriello. Not done yet.
— Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) February 24, 2020
That’s...going to be interesting if it happens.
11:33: Also, the Bruins and Ducks have swapped Nick Ritchie and Danton Heinen.
Danton Heinen (to Anaheim) is much more defensive. pic.twitter.com/mU67bRIal7
— Micah Blake McCurdy (@IneffectiveMath) February 24, 2020
No, I’m sorry, I’m still stuck on that Zach Parise rumor.
12:01: No, this does not mean Ryan Suter is coming back to Nashville. I know people have been talking about getting one more defender, but...no.
12:13: TSN is reporting that Andreas Athanasiou has been traded to the Oilers. Oof.
12:24: The return for Athanasiou is two second-round picks. Double oof. Meanwhile, rumors are a-mongering elsewhere in Alberta. IT’S WILD SPECULATION TIME AGAIN:
Johnny Gaudreau just left the ice at #Flames practice. Not sure why.
— Derek Wills (@Fan960Wills) February 24, 2020
A few people have pointed out that Johnny Gaudreau recently removed references to the Flames from his social media, which honestly sounds more interesting than his leaving practice (could be anything from a muscle cramp to a bathroom break).
After all this anticipation, at least one of these big names ought to go *glances at Colorado worriedly* nowhere, at all, let’s everyone settle quietly back down.
12:37: It’s actually two seconds and Sam Gagner for Athanasiou. Sure. Why not. The Red Wings are rebuilding, they definitely need Gagner.
12:48: The Hurricanes are rumored to be interested in Brady Skjei, and not-at-all-rumored to be in a bit of cap trouble, so we’ll see how that shakes out. Meanwhile, ice cream is lunch, right?
12:52: Stand down, Alberta.
#Flames LW Johnny Gaudreau: “I had to pee.”
— Wes Gilbertson (@WesGilbertson) February 24, 2020
1:04: The Oilers have acquired Tyler Ennis from Ottawa for a 2021 fifth-rounder, and the Flames have acquired Derek Forbort from the Kings for a fourth-round pick and are reported to be going after Chicago’s Erik Gustafsson. I take back my earlier “Stand down, Alberta.”
Also, Ennis looks like a much better add than either of those defenders.
1:07: Remember, we’ll be back with the audio cast—and hopefully fewer technical difficulties—at 1:30.
1:16: There’s a lot of talk about Joe Thornton going somewhere, and a lot of Joe Thornton not having gone anywhere yet.
1:23: The Flames did get Gustafsson from the Blackhawks, we all just thought someone else had already said so.
1:30: We’re back with the livestream!
1:30: The Sabres have traded, we think, Conor Sheary and Evan Rodrigues to the Penguins for Dominik Kahun, maybe. Three different trusted sources have three different pieces of this trade.
1:51: It’s being reported that Sami Vatanen has been traded to Carolina. Canes, wyd.
1:58: Robin Lehner has been traded to the Golden Knights. That’s a move there, and a good one—and they probably paid a good bit to keep him out of Colorado.
2:00: Pencils down.
2:34: We’ve wrapped up the livestream. Trades are still trickling in from other teams, but there’s been nothing out of the Preds’ office.
2:37: The Canucks’ acquisition of goalie Louis Domingue may be because Jacob Markstrom is hurt. That’s, uh, that’s not a great choice, Vancouver—Domingue isn’t going to be able to replace Markstrom.
2:53: Pierre LeBrun reports that the Preds have traded Matt Irwin and a pick to the Ducks for Korbinian Holzer—we’ll have a full breakdown as soon as we can.
3:15 Did... did Nashville lose a trade involving Matt Irwin?
