It’s hockey time in North Carolina…again!

Nashville Predators

On Tuesday, Filip Forsberg set the franchise record for overtime goals. He tapped in a leaking puck and Bridgestone celebrated accordingly. The Predators have put together an impressive record over the last 13-15 games, and they’re steadily climbing up the Central Division standings.

Per the office Preds site, “Nashville’s kill has additionally allowed just four power play goals in 30 chances through their last 10 games.” That’s an impressive penalty kill for a non-Cup contender. Special teams seems to make or break Nashville, and I’m very pleased to see this PK%. Coach Brunette refers to a solid penalty kill as something that gives momentum, and that’s certainly true for this curious (yet fun) Nashville squad.

With Nashville’s improved record comes incredible play from Juuse Saros. He’s put together a solid set of games in December, and he should be creeping back into the conversation for Nashville’s MVP. Saros is a stud, a star, and Nashville may wiggle and waver in front of him, but he’ll always cover their butts.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Canes are on the second half of a back-to-back…they played Detroit on Thursday night. Carolina has spent a long time on a road trip, so they will certainly be eager to return to their home rink.

From the Carolina official site: “Kochetkov was very good on Tuesday in Canada’s capital, as the only puck that beat him all night was a redirection in front. The team has gone every other game with the 24-year-old and Antti Raanta since December 2, but it is possible that Kochetkov’s work has earned him the green light for a second consecutive game. Regardless of which way Rod Brind’Amour and staff elect to go, both goaltenders will be needed over the next 24 hours, as the team plays tomorrow night against Nashville as well.” Whether Nashville faces Kotchetkov or Raanta, they’ll be facing a rested and skilled goalie. Raanta has previously been a Pred-killer, so I’m not sure which goalie we should hope for.

Andrei Svechnikov is out with an injury, but Carolina has plenty of weapons up front, including Sebastian Aho.

Keep Your Eye on This Guy

Nashville: Cody Glass needs to find his step and his game again. I think he lights it up a bit tonight, perhaps with an assist or two.

Carolina: Sebastian Aho is a threat all the time, but for me, the guy to watch out for tonight is Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

Reasons to Watch

  • It’s Friday night hockey!
  • Carolina used to be such a killer, and they’re kinda floundering.
  • Will we see more out of Tommy Novak and Jusso Pärssinen tonight?
  • Canes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov is absolutely electric.
