Sunday’s Dump & Chase: Aftermath

Ryan Ellis Trade News & Notes:

Predators trade Ryan Ellis to Flyers, get Cody Glass and Phil Myers | On the Forecheck
I do not love this trade. I feel like there’s a possibility that it’s to clear cap space for Shea Weber, but there’s also a possibility it’s to clear cap space for someone like Gabe Landeskog, whom I’m not sure is sufficient difference-maker here, or simply to avoid having to go 4/4 or expose a core defender in the expansion draft–which could have been avoided by simply not playing Dante Fabbro in the playoffs in 2019. Just frustrating all around.

The Ryan Ellis trade is a great piece of business for the Flyers | Broad Street Hockey
At least our colleagues at Broad Street Hockey agree Phil Meyers has top-four potential, though at 24…well, I’d like to see a little more confidence than that.

Report: Vegas Golden Knights acquire Nolan Patrick in 3-team trade, Cody Glass to Nashville Predators | Knights On Ice
Our colleagues at Knights on Ice, on the other hand, aren’t terribly optimistic about Cody Glass. Eric likes the acquisition (we’ll get more from him on that later), but it seems like Knights fans were expecting him to have already made more impact than he did. Also not ideal.

The announcement of the protected lists will come later this morning, and we’ll have your coverage here.

Carey Price’s contract is, uh, large–but on the other hand, his family is from western Canada, and he might be okay with being drafted by the Kraken.

Mmmm…hm. Hm. Are the Columbus Blue Jackets okay? (Are their fans okay?)

Carey Price, Jonathan Quick, Max Domi, and Vladimir Tarasenko among big names reportedly left unprotected for Expansion Draft | RMNB

Heiskanen is getting paid and deserves every bit of it.

Why the Maple Leafs made last-minute trade for Jared McCann | Sportsnet.ca
It’s because of the expansion draft, obviously, but it would have been funnier if the answer had been that he had been on one or more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Stanley Cup teams (he wasn’t).

San Jose Sharks get goalie Adin Hill from Arizona Coyotes before NHL roster freeze | ESPN
Maybe Hill will actually make a difference for the Sharks? Or maybe he’ll fall victim to the San Jose goalie curse, who can say.

Dr. Ovechkin? Alex Ovechkin is officially one step away from earning his PhD. | RMNB
Even with the acknowledgement of assistants (share of work done unclear), where does he find the time?!

‘A dream come true’: Taya Currie becomes first female taken in OHL draft | Sportsnet.ca
Best of luck to Currie (also: competitive barrel racing? I love learning new things—and where does she find the time?!).
