Sunday’s Dump & Chase: Letdown

[Kate here. Due to a perfect storm of errors and miscommunications, last night’s recap didn’t happen, and none of us realized it was missing until after midnight. Then, due to some further perfect-stormery, this morning’s recap fell through too. Thanks to Rachel for finishing off this morning’s links by committee.]

Ellis Returns as Preds Fall to Lightning | NHL.com
The Nashville Predators were shut out last night in a painful loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The effect on the standings, with the Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks both winning last night, also wasn’t great.

It’s not cap circumvention if it’s in a three-way (trade).

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Riley Nash, Increase Cap Space Ahead of NHL Trade Deadline | The Hockey News on Sports Illustrated
The Leafs having cap space is still a weird concept.

Trade: Avalanche acquire Devan Dubnyk from Sharks | ProHockeyTalk
I’d say “on purpose?” but at this point I fully expect Joe Sakic to call whatever occult force he’s got on speed-dial and for Dubnyk to not allow a goal for the rest of the calendar year.

McDavid, Oilers question NHL’s decision to schedule game after Cave memorial | Sportsnet.ca

NHL Playoffs: Who has the edge in Blues, Coyotes, Sharks playoff race | ProHockeyTalk
The fact that the San Jose Sharks are still in the playoff race at all is kind of surprising. It’s been a weird year. In a different sense, it’s been a weird few years.

NHL announces plans for Canucks to resume practice, return to play | Sportsnet.ca
This is incredibly messed up. The players might be recovered–or recovering, for a lot of people a slow process which is physically and emotionally difficult–but the virus is acknowledged to have spread from them to their families.

Not only are players who’ve just recovered from serious illness about to go through a brutal grind of a schedule, not only are they going to have to do so while potentially worried about the safety of their loved ones, they’re doing this to play totally meaningless games.

The Vancouver Canucks are not going to make the playoffs. There is no reason on earth to put them through this. Do the rest of the season in the North on points percentage.

2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs start date to be determined by NHL
The start date for the Stanley Cup Playoffs is unknown after the end of the NHL regular season was extended to May 16 on Saturday.

The Jack Campbell story out of Toronto is a pretty awesome story.

An NHL Draft Prospect’s Journey Into the Unknown | The Hockey News on Sports Illustrated
First of all, he has an excellent name. Second, the journey the prospects are taking in a weird covid season certainly is a unique one.
