After the NHL Draft, free agency and other offseason moves, NHL.com is examining where each team stands in preparation for the 2023-24 regular season, which starts Oct. 10. Today, the Buffalo Sabres.

At some point things have to turn around for Buffalo, right?

Sharks sign forward Filip Zadina to one-year, $1.1M contract
The San Jose Sharks have signed Filip Zadina to a one-year, $1.1 million contract, the team announced Monday.

It’s a little cheaper and a little shorter than the deal nobody claimed him off waivers on, but I’m sure Zadina is pleased to have found a home.

Tebow part of ownership group for ECHL expansion team
Tim Tebow, a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who went on to play professional football and baseball, is part of the ownership group for the Lake Tahoe expansion team in the ECHL.

Dubois looks to change reputation with Kings
Pierre-Luc Dubois is hoping to change his image after signing an eight-year contract with Los Angeles.

On the one hand, I strongly support people’s right to leave a job that isn’t working for them or where they aren’t happy. On the other hand, I do kind of feel like once you’re making seven figures to provide entertainment for sports fans in a specific region, you could maybe dismiss the thought of “it’d be nice to work somewhere with nightlife/a beach/an airport” or whatever.

That said, the don’t-make-waves attitude about pro athletes needing to be grateful for their opportunities presumably also makes it very hard for players who have a real and serious problem with someone affiliated with their current team to try to leave without getting scrutinized and criticized. Maybe the solution really is to treat NHL teams more like any other employer, where if you’re not happy there and someone else is willing to hire you you just leave.
