Nashville Predators 3, New York Rangers 4: Power Play Goals Not Enough To Secure Win

The last home game of 2018 for Nashville, and times continued to be tough for the Preds before the game even started. It was announced during warm-ups that Kyle Turris would be out, day to day, with a lower body injury. Here’s hoping Nashville made a “get healthy” New Year’s resolution for 2019.

Cody McLeod (remember him) laid a heavy hit on P.K. Subban against the boards early in the first period and Peter Laviolette wasted no time letting the officials know he was not happy with the lack of penalty. The officials subsequently were not here for Laviolette’s feelings and issued the Preds a bench minor. The Rangers immediately capitalized on the power play with a goal from Chris Kreider.

The Rangers goal must have been just what Nashville needed to wake up, as the Kevin Fiala, Calle Jarnkrok, and Craig Smith line went to work, drawing a penalty to give Nashville their first power play opportunity of the night. Christmas may be over but Mattias Ekholm is still delivering gifts in the form of a power play goal.

Yes, a Nashville Predators power play goal. They do exist.

The second period saw some back and forth action with a goal from Jesper Fast followed by a quick goal from Kevin Fiala to tie things back up. Nick Bonino wanted in on the goal scoring action and gifted us another power play goal to give the Preds their first lead of the game.

That’s right…two power play goals in one night.

Nashville’s lead wouldn’t last long as Marc Staal tied the game, followed by another goal from Jesper Fast for his second of the night giving the Rangers back their lead. Nashville out-shot the Rangers 37-22 and rallied hard to tie the game up with the extra attacker but it wasn’t enough to win the game.

Random Observations

  • Oh look, Cody McLeod out here taking people’s heads off already. Rinaldo, consider this your Bat Signal.
  • Lavy is mad, and the refs are having none of it.
  • Rangers score immediately on the power play…please don’t be one of those nights.
  • This Fiala, Jarnkrok, Smith line is out here doing the lord’s work.
  • A Nashville Predators Power Play Goal. Mark this day in history.
  • The Preds look awake now.
  • The power play is still not great.
  • Ekholm and Subban look much more comfortable on the ice together, but they’re not having a great night.
  • That might be the easiest goal the Rangers score all night.
  • There are a lot of Rangers fans here, and they’re loud. Really loud.
  • Kevin Fiala holy all the swear words! Could not have timed that goal better.
  • I walked away for 30 seconds and the Preds scored another power play goal. What is happening? Have they turned over a new leaf?
  • Preds have some serious hustle late in the second period. It’s good to see.
  • Despite Turris being out, the Preds look much better tonight than they did on Thursday. Much much better.
  • The Rangers would tie the game as soon as I compliment the Preds’ game.
  • Oh another Rangers goal…cool.
  • Well this period has been a stinker.
  • The empty net makes me way more anxious than should be humanly possible.
