It looks like Nashville Predators play-by-play radio man Tom Callahan has left the organization rather suddenly, just as the team is getting ready to head out on a 7-game road trip, in fact.
The Nashville Post brings the news:
Sources confirmed Monday evening that Tom Callahan, who has handled radio play-by-play duties for the since the start of the 2008-09 season, resigned for ‘personal reasons.’ No further details were provided.
Tom’s Twitter handle has recently changed over to @CallahanPBP from @predsradio, apparently stripping away any affiliation with the team. According to the Post story, Willy Daunic looks to be the replacement at least in the short term.
Callahan’s voice will be missed from Predators broadcasts, I have to say I was a huge fan of his work. Tom brought the hallmarks of hockey play-by-play to Nashville airwaves; the clear, staccato-like speaking style which is ideally suited to the unique challenges of hockey broadcasting, a game with the physical intensity of football, the free-flowing nature of basketball, the strategic aspects of baseball and oh yeah, all the players on the ice change up every minute or so and you have to keep track of that, too.
You did Smashville proud, Tom – and you did it with style:
