Season Summary

Even though his season got off to a scary start, Roman Josi had a breakout year for the Predators. Though only in his third season, Josi shattered every previous scoring record he had. He skated 26 minutes a night (only Shea Weber skated more), was one of only five Preds to touch 40 points, and all while being used on the top defensive pair against the hardest competition. The 23-year-old also represented his home country of Switzerland at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The organization showed how much faith they have in him when they signed him to a 7-year, $28 million contract. He is looking to be worth every penny right now, especially if he can push the limits of his development into a stud defenseman.

Highlight Moment

This goal shows exactly what Josi is capable of when he jumps into the rush. The puck bobbles around the neutral zone for a bit after he chipped it away from his own blue line. Craig Smith picks it up and bolts into the Blues‘ zone with David Legwand. Meanwhile, Josi blows past Magnus Paajarvi which essentially creates a 3-on-2 opportunity for the Preds. Brian Elliot had no chance.

We also can’t forget about his game-winning shootout move against the Flyers, and the adorable GIF it created after:

The Road Ahead

Josi hasn’t hit his ceiling yet, which is great news for fans and the team. With a more offensively minded coach, he may see his point (and goal) totals increase in the coming years. Of course, offense is well and good, but he will still be counted on to eat the tough minutes every night against the opponent’s best players. One would expect the Josi/Weber pairing to continue going forward, though Seth Jones should see some more responsibility next year. Even if Josi and Jones swap between the first and second pairing, having a top three of those two plus Weber is enough to make any defensively challenged team blue with envy.
