Saturday’s Dump & Chase: Running Up That (Playoff) Hill

Donor Recipient Meeting Highlights Preds Hockey Fights Cancer Night | NHL.com
If Hockey Fights Cancer does get more people to register as donors, that’d be fantastic. I’m not sure how much of an effect it has (Eugene Melnyk’s bizarre antics aside), but these stories are good every time one of them runs.

NHL’s Black History Month celebration includes a mobile museum | Jewels From The Crown
Jewels from the Crown has a writeup of the Black Hockey History Tour’s museum and an interview with Willie O’Ree, for those of you who missed the tour when it came to Nashville.

Nassau Coliseum to reportedly host all Isles’ home games next season | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
I confess: I have absolutely no idea what is going on with the Islanders. I know the article goes through it all, but I can’t remember which of their arenas is the one that’s falling apart and whether it’s the same as the arena where you can’t get to the visitors’ locker room during the game so sometimes trainers have to frantically clutch towels to bleeding players and wait for a whistle. I think that one is the one where you can’t see the ice from the seats?

Anyway, they’re getting a new arena soon! Hopefully it won’t have any of those problems.

Carolina Hurricanes Systems Analyst: Putting on Ayres | Canes Country
In-depth analysis of an EBUG’s performance seems both silly and delightful–good fun, either way, and also something that let me at least learn a few things.

David Ayres, improbable EBUG, donates stick to Hockey Hall of Fame | Sportsnet.ca
I was going to say “On the other hand, actually putting his stick in the HHoF seems like it’s going a little far” until I actually read the article and learned that Ayres was the first EBUG to actually get credit on the gamesheet for the W, as well as the oldest goalie to win his first regular-season NHL game. So, actually, congratulations, Hurricanes, you done good–and Ayres too.

Robin Lehner makes Golden Knights debut; Mark Stone injured | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
It’s been a tumultuous few days for the Golden Knights, with a stellar new goaltender and, uh, an injury to a phenomenal skater. Not ideal for them; we’ll see how the timeline for Stone’s injury works out.

Oilers defenseman Mike Green to miss 3-4 weeks with MCL sprain | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
The Oilers have also lost a key player–for them a new acquisition–to injury. The Pacific isn’t a friendly place right now.

After eye-opening play without McDavid, Draisaitl is in Hart Trophy race | Sportsnet.ca
On the other hand, Leon Draisaitl has been great for Edmonton. The Draisaitl narrative is actually reminding me a little of the Evgeni Malkin narrative while Sidney Crosby was missing all that time with post-concussion syndrome. Anyone else?

How Peguis First Nation’s young champions revived its hockey legacy | Sportsnet.ca
The community aspect of sports–having an arena, belonging to a town or city–is one of the best things about it, even though it’s also something that can very easily get warped when hundreds of millions of dollars are in play. This is one of the good stories, though.

Kreider sidelined with fractured foot | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
This is not a fun way to celebrate signing a new contract.

Canadiens’ trend of blown leads doesn’t rest solely on players’ shoulders | Sportsnet.ca
I confess I don’t know what Claude Julien should be doing differently, but I did really like this quote: “It’s not as if the 18 skaters dressing for all these games are saying to themselves, “Forget 60 minutes, let’s just play for 40.””

Rachel Llanes’ journey from role player to star | The Ice Garden
I feel like there’s a movie option in here.
