Thursday’s Dump & Chase: Stay Busy
Unfortunately hockey is still canceled. So let’s look at some movies and TV shows that will keep you preoccupied in the meantime.
Hockey News & Notes
So yeah... there still isn’t anything of note going on in the hockey world. So I thought I would give you some movie and TV show suggestions to help pass the time. I’ve bolded the ones I’m particularly fond of. Feel free to drop any other suggestions I may have missed down in the comments.
QUARANTINE STREAMING EXTRAVAGANZA - MOVIES
Rentals!
- 1917
- Knives Out - This is probably the funniest movie I saw in 2019.
- JoJo Rabbit
- Uncut Gems - Anxiety inducing, impeccably frantic, and unbearably loud (... in a good way), this is one of my absolute favorites of last year. It’s not for everyone, and did I mention it’s loud? It’s loud. Like a bunch of people talking over each other while the movie’s soundtrack refuses to fade out for two whole hours loud. God, I love this movie.
- Joker - The movie that grossed over 1 billion dollars and finally won Joaquin Phoenix Best Actor (he honestly should’ve won it a couple of different times already for Walk The Line and The Master). To be honest, this movie is just okay (I’d say a 7.5 or 8 out of 10), but Phoenix’s performance is something else, and it’s worth watching for that alone. There’s also a Clown Union... I’m serious about that. Before he becomes the Joker (spoilers, I guess?), he’s a member of a Clown Union.
- Richard Jewell
- Parasite - The Best Picture winner at the Oscars, and it 1000% deserved it. /
Streaming - Netflix
- Goodfellas - I’m sure most of you have seen this already, but there’s never a bad time to rewatch the greatest movie ever made. And if you haven’t seen it, oh my god what are you doing with your life? Watch it.
- Mississippi Grind - It’s Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn playing poker. Sounds fun, right?
- Her
- Miracle - This is a hockey website, after all.
- Goon - Personally this is my favorite hockey movie, but for the love of God do not watch the sequel.
- Mystic River - This is the Sean Penn movie where he shouts “IS THAT MY DAUGHTER IN THERE!?!?” (Spoiler alert: it is)
- Good Time - This is from the Safdie brothers, who also directed 2019’s Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler. Like Uncut Gems, this movie is an absolutely dizzying experience, and I can’t recommend it enough.
- The Irishman - This movie is, no joke, three and a half hours long. I personally love it, and it’s not like you can use the “I don’t have the time to sit through a three-and-a-half hour movie” excuses any more.
- Zodiac/
Streaming - HBO
- Long Shot
- The Town - Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner are bank robbers in Boston. I hope you like over the top Mass-Hole accents, because they are everywhere in this movie.
- Crazy, Stupid, Love
- Prisoners - This movie is grim, dark, brutal, depressing, (insert your own ‘hard-to-watch’ adjective here), but you won’t be able to look away the entire time.
- Bohemian Rhapsody
- Rush
- Yesterday/
Streaming - Amazon Prime
- Eighth Grade
- Clue - As the kids would say, this 1985 Tim Curry classic whodunnit “SLAPS”.
- Lady Bird
- Honey Boy - This is the Shia LeBeouf movie he made about his childhood. I haven’t seen it yet, but it certainly looked interesting.
- Jay & Silent Bob Reboot - This is probably an awful movie, but Tucker circa 2005 is very excited about there being a new Kevin Smith movie to watch./
Streaming - Disney+
- Star Wars - All of them. You’ve got the time.
- Toy Story - Again, all of them. You’ve got the time.
- Smart House
- Brink! - The quintessential Disney Channel Original Movie. Team X-Blades for life. Skating for money isn’t a bad thing, Brink.
- ZooTopia/
Quarantine Streaming Extravaganza - TV SHOWS
- The Sopranos (HBO) - Probably the most influential, important, and overall greatest television show ever created. The genesis of Prestige TV.
- Breaking Bad (Netflix)
- The Wire (HBO)
- Fleabag (Amazon Prime) - The synopsis will likely scare away some (male) viewers, but trust me, this show is extremely good. A tragi-comedy (apparently this is a thing now), that will stick with you for a while after you finish it. Also there’s only 12 episodes, so there isn’t a large investment involved.
- The Boys (Amazon Prime)
- Succession (HBO) - Probably pound-for-pound the best show on television right now.
- Altered Carbon (Netflix)
- Mad Men (Netflix) - The 1960’s! Old suits, alcoholism, sexism, indoor cigarette-smoking, oh my!
- Watchmen (HBO) - This may be a tough watch for those not familiar with the source material, but it’s an extremely well crafted and ultra-creative followup to the graphic novel of the same name.
- Future Man (Hulu)
- The Leftovers (HBO)/
